Pacific Sunset

Last spring I installed a Fremontodendron californicum "Pacific Sunset" in one of the south corners of the garden. It's gonna be a huge shrub, probably 15-foot or so .
It used to be found wild in the Peninsular Ranges of Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and south west Imperial counties (southernmost California) and northern Baja California, where it grew in chapparal and cypress woodland habitats. Its range in the United States is now restricted to a few locations in San Diego county. I consider it one of the most elegant specimens among California native plants. This is another key player in the creation of a native sanctuary. The idea of offering a PB island of wild chapparal to birds and insects is becoming a reality.
