Sunday morning in North County

Solana Beach.

Sunday morning I met with Roland and his friend Bill for a session in Solana Beach. It turned out to be shoulder to occasional head high...my plan to surf Cherry Hill to avoid close-outs didn't really pan out. The swell kept hitting the coast straight on and even CH was closing out, if not for a few rare exceptions. It was interesting to be back to the spot I occasionally surfed with Travis in previous months because we haven't figured it out yet and there was definitely something to learn yesterday. Previously we focused on the left-hander but during the winter season (on bigger surf size) it's the right-hander to come alive. Yesterday the left was closing out most of the time, while the rights were giving a few chances to make it all the way to the base of the cliffs. The take-offs seemed to be fairly slow but there's some sort of rock ledge in the inside; the wave suddenly hits something and gets really hollow and fast.
Roland and I dialed into some of those rights just before the end of the session. There's a little crew of older locals who surf bigger boards, they are not very good but they know the spot and they show up early. The take-off area was quite tight yesterday and it got really crowded around 8:30 Am. It's North County after all. Despite one too many close-outs we had fun. Super-glassy too.
